The studio is led by James Nellist, a designer with a Master of Architecture degree from Ferris State University and Kendall College of Art and Design. Since 2018, the work has been shaped through experience in established West Michigan firms, contributing to a range of residential projects.
Established as an independent practice in early 2024, the studio reflects a more focused intention: to design homes with clarity, purpose, and a direct response to the needs of each client. The work prioritizes thoughtful decision-making at every stage, with an emphasis on creating spaces that are both enduring and precise.
Process
Each project begins with a conversation—an understanding of how the home will be lived in, and what it needs to support.
From there, the design develops through a deliberate and iterative process. Early concepts are tested against site conditions, refined through collaboration, and resolved with clarity before construction begins.
Close coordination with builders and regular site involvement ensure that the intent of the design is carried through with precision. The process remains direct, responsive, and grounded from initial concept to completion.

Studio
Based in East Grand Rapids, the studio focuses on custom homes and residential additions throughout West Michigan.
Operating as an independent practice allows for a direct and collaborative process. The work involves ongoing coordination with builders, frequent site visits, and clear communication with clients to ensure each project is executed with accuracy and intent.
The studio remains intentionally small, allowing for a hands-on approach and consistent involvement from concept through completion.
